There were two very young Horned Larks picking about in the sandy parking lot just south of the Blakeman's pavillion. They were not very skittish and let me approach to around 10 feet. The feathers aren't very well developed and I suspect these are quite recently fledged.
At times each of them would dig a little pit in the sand and then take a waterless bath with considerable fluffing and fussing! I watched one do a somersault (not pretty!) as it tucked its head under its wing and proceeded to roll onto its back! This photo shows one of them trying to immerse itself in the sand.
