The column was erected in 1644 and is the oldest secular monument in Warsaw and one of the oldest in northern Europe.
It is one of Warsaw's most famous landmarks and is located in Castle Square.
It was erected to memorize King Zygmunt III Waza (Sigismund III Vasa), who transfered the capital from Krakow to Warsaw in 1596.
