Akureyri is Iceland's second largest urban area, after the Reykjavík area. It is an important port and fishing centre, with a population of about 18,000 (Reykjavík has about 200,000).

Akureyri is a popular destination for cruise ships. A big ship can bring over 5,000 visitors at one time, which is close to 1/3 of its population.
