Final dawn, Cannery Cove, Pybus Bay, Alaska, 2013

July mornings can be misty in Southeast Alaska, but by 9 am, the skies usually begin to clear. On this morning, the beginning of my final full day in Alaska, the morning sky turned orange during the clearing process. The fog lifted, revealing snowcapped mountains ringing the sides of Pybus Bay. I structured this image as a five layer photograph. The calm waters of the bay provides a base, the island at the head of our cove offered a middle ground, the mountains provided a truly Alaskan background. The orange sky pulls the eye up and into the image, while the gray mist at the top represents the rising fog. I had already made several images of this scene when suddenly a bald eagle left its nest just behind our camp, sounding a loud call and circling overhead. It passed over me once, and then floated through my frame once again. I was able to place the eagle within the rising fog at the top of the frame to complete this image, and this gallery.

Your comment on this photo is very moving, Tim. The appearance of a bald eagle in flight against this stunning landscape and sky was, as you note, is an object lesson in why we make photographs. We sometimes try to bring a spiritual dimension to what we attempt to do with our cameras. We often will attempt to express feelings and ideas that are intended as a summation of what we have just experienced -- a spiritual exclamation point. This closing image was just such an attempt, and I thank you for recognizing it.

Why do we photograph? For me this image sums it up. The spirit of our drive to make images is captured in the flight of the eagle. It is almost as if you are showing the spirit of this trip taking flight in you being as you move on to your next adventure.

Thanks, Carol, and good luck to your granddaughter in Alaska. I understand the Kenai Peninsula is quite beautiful. And thanks, Rose, for noting the role of this image in the gallery. I opened the gallery with a shot of an eagle against a golden cloud, and I close the gallery with this photograph of a soaring eagle placed against a layered summation of Alaska itself.

You posted several eagle images in this gallery, and I like this one best! The layers and colors add up to a truly expressive Alaskan adventure! Vote!
