1973 - the mainframe computer tape library at Eastern Airlines Commercial Computer Operations

Bldg. 11, Miami International Airport, Florida

The commercial operations mainframes were located on the 2nd floor of Building 11 at Miami International Airport, just to the north of Building 16, Eastern's corporate headquarters. Commercial Operations was totally separated from the System One computer operation located out by the Doral Country Club. I worked there from August to October 1973 as a computer operations trainee working in the tape library, on the midnight shift with Tuesdays and Wednesdays off. Thankfully the OPEC fuel crisis somehow caused 17 of us to get laid off in Computer Operations (hundreds of others in other departments) and soured my long-standing interest on airline employment. I was recalled by Eastern the following March on the first day of my new employment with the Aviation Department at MIA and I declined the recall, one of the smartest moves I ever made.

This tape library had in excess of 18,000 tapes on movable cabinet racks and we had to pull tapes by number in sequence for upcoming computer jobs running that night. After we pulled a zillion we had to scratch the labels off of tapes that had expired that day, which was really mind-challenging after a while.
