I see lots of green flies of this kind flying around and perching on vegetation, but this was the first time I have ever seen a red one. After spotting it flying among the milkweed I made it my mission to get a photo so I could figure out what it is compared to the green flies (still working on that) and also because the brilliant metallic red and patterning on the wings was so striking.
