This old church near Las Casas was built in 1524. Mexico is
dominated by Catholics, but this area is predominantly Protestant
and other Christian groups. To counter this, the Catholic church
working with Marist priests and nuns developed an ideology called
liberation theology. Thus this church is an example of that theology.
Photography is prohibited inside. But we did go in and found it to be a mix
of indigenous priest providing remedies or cures to the local people. And the
typical Catholic church setting of a very old, impoverished church.
The priest sat on the floor under a painting of some saint peddling their
wares. It was a very interesting and contradictory scene.
