Goat's-beard (Tragopogon dubium)

This European wildflower, naturalized in our area over many decades, is also called "Johnny-go-to-bed-by-noon", because the flower generally closes by noon. The name "Goat's-beard" comes from the seedhead which some felt resembled the beard of a billy-goat. This species, plus another Tragopogon, also called by the same common names, is widespread in the area.
