Taroko Gorge Entrance with Liwu River

Hualien, Taiwan

Mountains surrounding this gorge can reach from sea level to 11,500 feet = 3500m. A little further inland you can find one mountain reaching up to 392 meters - Zhongyangjian Mountain. The highest mountain in Taiwan is Yushan or Jade Mountain. It is 12,966 feet high (3,952m).
It is the highest point on the Tropic of Cancer and the only point on that circle of latitude where there is any evidence of Quaternary glaciation. As recently as seventeen thousand years ago, permanent ice caps existed throughout Taiwan's highest mountains and extended due to the wet climate down to 2,800 metres (9,190 ft). Currently the nearest glaciers to the Tropic of Cancer are in Mexico on the Iztaccíhuatl volcano.
I did not expect to find high mountains like that on this island.
