There is nothing like the moor when the animals are popping out their young. We see deer, sheep, cows and ponies all trailing little bundles of gangly fluff behind them. This year, it’s all been a bit odd because there seems to have been a problem with the ewes in as much as there are quite a lot on the moor without lambs. We don’t know whether the lambs died in the cold spring or whether the tup didn’t do his job properly last autumn!
At the moment though, the stars of the moor are the ponies. There are lots of babies around and this tiny little one was on the side of the road. I reckon not more than a day or two old.
I have to confess to being desperate for a shot given that it was 8pm and I was covered from head to toe in tile grout and other muck. I said to DM, who was driving us across the moor, if you see anything remotely cute, stop because I have to get myself a pic. He’d seen a little group of ponies with this baby on his way to collect me from my workplace so he knew they would be good for the purpose.
As I got out of the car, DM warned me not to alarm the foal’s mother who was nearby but she was very serene while I engaged with her offspring in its brave new world. Not only that but the little ‘un was delighted to have a new friend to play with and spent five minutes boinging about as if he had little pogo sticks for legs. The G7 isn’t really up to shooting things that are moving fast so most of the shots are blurry and with only half a foal! This is the best of the bunch and I fully accept even it’s not great! I can’t promise to do better any time soon because of my building work and its looming deadline so my apologies for the crappiness of the view into my world at the moment.
