There isn't a heck of a lot to photograph on the western beaches of Arran especially if there is no sign of a sunset but one thing it does have in its favour is that all the stones on the beaches are generally very pale in colour and a lot have pleasing patterns and colours suffused within them. This particular stone was almost completely concealed by course damp virgin sand but the stone was powder dry. The shadowless light that had plagued us for almost our entire stay for once proved just right to reveal tone and texture. I spent the best part of an hour setting this shot up during which time the tide was coming in. I was just about to shoot when a foamy wave front containing a small amount of beach detritus washed up and sank inches from the stone. At first I wasn't best pleased but the air bubbles left some pleasing negative space and just a touch more visual interest that didn't detract.
