If you look at old Winter and Pond photos of SE Alaska villages at the turn of the century, you will see houses like this in the old villages. The family would have their totems right in their front yards. This is in the village of Saxmon. The near totem has an eagle that has rotted off and is hanging about half way down and in the brush below it is another eagle. There is also a canon here. This was very cool to see. I remember the old totems when I was a kid growing up in Wrangell before they upgraded them to the modern ones you see today.
