One of the bluebird boxes I oversee at a private location has a nest in it this year. Previously only Tree Swallows and House Wrens had nested in the boxes. The box had one bluebird egg in it yesterday and two in it today. Bluebirds lay one egg a day until 3 to 5 eggs are laid. Incubation begins after the last egg is laid so they will all hatch at roughly the same time. There is also the possibility of a second nest being built in another box. It has fresh nesting material in it of the same type used by the bluebirds in the first box. It will be exciting and interesting to watch what happens over the next weeks. Hopefully the House Wrens I heard in the area this morning, my first of the year, won't bully the bluebirds away. The female bluebird was perched in a nearby tree when I inspected the box (and also removed a wasp nest that was being built inside the box) and the male was singing in the distance.
