Mark Anthony & Cleopatra Traveled This Road Into Ephesus

view map

In autumn of 33 BC Antony & Cleopatra moved from Alexandra to Ephesus to gather a fleet of ships and warriors to attack Rome and take over the Roman Empire. Five months later in the spring of 32 BC, nearly 300 senators arrived in Ephesus from Rome in support of Anthony. There followed a number of disputes and arguments in Ephesus between these senators and Anthony with the senators not wanting to be associated with Cleopatra, as a non Roman, but she won the argument mainly based on the fact that it was her treasure [which she had with her in Ephesus] that was underwriting the costs of the troops and Navy. In April of 32 BC Anthony & Cleopatra with her fleet of 500 warships, some carrying the 75,000 legionnaires, 25,000 lightly armed infantry and 12,000 cavalry and horses that made up their army, sailed slowly past Kustur beach, along the coast line of Kusadasi, down Long Beach. At Samos Anthony & Cleopatra beached and held a festival before sailing over the horizon towards Athens were they rendezvoused with the rest of their army. After the summer Anthony & Cleopatra established a base near Patras west of Athens as Octavius Augustus Caesar declared war.
