Scouring rush/Horsetail (Equisetum hyemale)

Came across a huge stand of these horsetails near Indian Creek in Prescott-Russell. This particular species is very tall, likes damp areas on wooded edges, and is native to North America, while a subspecies is native to Eurasia.

Horsetails are one of the oldest plants, with little change from prehistoric times, except that they are much smaller. They are pretty fascinating plants and quite intriguing when you look at them closely.

I really like Horsetails. Those giant horsetails of ancient times are now the coal deposits beneath the earth. And they were used for medicinal purposes by many cultures since the beginning!

I love this plant and it is indeed very old. In a nature park nearby where I live you can see the giant horsetail a rare find in Belgium.

Intriguing indeed. Do those bamboo-like stems in the background belong to this species as well?
