Snow Geese

Checked out the flooded fields just east of Bourget (east of Ottawa) this afternoon, and saw huge numbers of snow geese. They were far back from the road, so both a telescope for viewing and a good camera for photography, were necessary. However, through my binoculars I got reasonable views, but I was really wishing for a camera with a telephoto lens today!! It was a spectacular sight when they all rose up and formed a wall of snow geese against the blue sky. Someone reported that around 100,000 snow geese landed in this area at noon.

Always a thrilling site! We experienced the same on the southwestern shore of Lake Ontario last year.

Wow, a storm of geese! To me seeing this many birds at once is one the best spectacles in birding.

This is truly an amazing sight and you have captured it beautifully. I think I would like this better than a closer up shot. It shows the large number of these birds. The cover the sky. V.
Don14-Apr-2013 21:41
A grand sight, like flakes of snow being carried by the wind. You did great without a strong telephoto lens.

I've seen this here in Texas. They come to our rice fields in the winter. To see them all take off is a heart-pounding thrill. And the noise! Wonderful capture! V
Glenn D.14-Apr-2013 20:35
and when seen like this, one sees how they get their name.
Helen Betts14-Apr-2013 20:35
Wow, that's a lot of snow geese! It must have been a fantastic sight to see. Telephoto or not, it's still a great capture. V.
