20130410 001 SERIES -Great Horned Owl.jpg

Ottawa West

Four images of the female GH Owl on the nest high up (20 meters +/-) on a broken off tree stump. The tree stump is full of old Woodpecker holes and I suspect that the tree snapped at the level of a large cavity previously made by a Woodpecker to nest in.

The top three images show the female to be raised up quite a bit leading us to suspect that the young have hatched. Prior to early April, Mom was mostly hunkered down so that only the tips of her tufts or a tip of the tail were visible. The last (fourth) image, taken March 23, shows her still hunkered down deep.

Note: All the while Mom sits on the nest, Dad keeps guard above her in a nearby tree, except of course when he has to hunt (at night) for food.

Top image: Mom seems to be checking on, what I suspect are one or more chicks (Owlets). To my knowledge the young had not yet been sighted as of last Friday. NOTE ADDED: Sunday afternoon fellow Pbaser and fellow photographer, Penny reported a brief sighting of one Owlet being fed by Mom.

Mom taking a look at the people below.

First time I saw the female raised this high, suggesting that the eggs have probably hatched. This image was taken early April.

Image taken March 23. The Owl was still snuggled deep down in the nest suggesting that the eggs have not yet hatched.
