Well it had to be done. This might be the site of the Iclandic Parliament from 930 to 18something whatever... To me this is special for another reason.
You can just make out some figures walking along the road, the rest of the group, they went to check out a suitable Aurora location, I just had to go and walk along the boundary of the two continents. Its a geologist thing!
Just behind me marks the eastern boundary of the North American plate. Its equivalent across the graben, marking the western boundary of the Eurasian plate is Hrafnagjá. Þingvellir and the Great Rift Valley of Eastern Africa are the only sites on Earth where the effects of two major plates drifting apart can be observed.
Apparantly we are moving apart about 7mm a year
