The namesake of the holy city of Moulay Idriss was the great-grandson of the Prophet Mohammed. He moved here from Mecca in the 7th century and converted the locals to Islam. He was the founder of the first real dynasty in Morocco. The city was closed to non-Muslims until the mid-20th Century. The Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss is here.
