I created this portrait of a slave girl. She represents the suffering that can come to us sometimes through no fault of our own. I love Joseph Campbell's thought that we can all find a place of joy within us— somewhere no matter what our circumstance. As we focus on what brings us joy, we can reduce our pain. I believe that identifying what we are grateful for everyday is one way of discovering the "place within us where there's joy." Giving thanks for what we have always brings with it peace and joy.
