Built in 2000 and essentially a copy of one of the last and largest clippers, the Norwegian/German ship Preussen (1902). This is a fully rigged ship and after Preussen the only square rigged 5 master. What a sight to see. A fully rigged ship has square sails on each mast. Royal Clipper has 42 sails weighing a total of over 4 tons. Square riggers are faster than fore and aft schooner type rigs in the trades but less maneuverable in coastal waters. They require a lot of crew to handle all those sails and thus they became less popular toward the end of the era of sail when sailors became more expensive. Later we saw it leaving with sails up, but I couldn't get a shot.
