More About the Subal Housing

Since I uploaded this gallery, I have been surprised at how many of you have viewed it. I originally uploaded images of this housing for my D70 camera only because I was selling it to someone located in Belgium and he wanted to see images of what he would be purchasing. So that is the simple reason why the images are in the gallery. I was planning on taking down the image after the sale. However, so many of you viewed the images and continued to view them, that I left the images in the gallery and did not take them down after the sale. I finally decided to put up this blog to give more information about the Subal Housing in the gallery. And so that is the reason this blog is here! In case you are wondering if I replaced it after the sale, the answer is yes, I did replace it with the Subal Housing for the D300, which is the camera I upgraded to after the D70.

Subal housings are one of the best housings for a camera that you can buy if you want to shoot underwater. I chose to buy the "Cadillac" brand of housing rather than the "Ford" or "Chevy" brand of housing. I have not been dissatisfied with the choice I made. My D300 camera has never flooded when shooting underwater when using my Subal housing made for it. And, my D70 camera only flooded once when using the Subal housing pictured in this gallery. The time that it flooded was entirely my fault. If I had assembled it correctly that fateful day at the Wakatobi Dive Resort in Indonesia, there would not have been a leak and my D70 would not have become toast. In short, I have had many successful dives and captured many underwater images without water coming in contact with the camera inside the housing.

The housing, being made of aluminum, is quite heavy when not in the water. However, when using it underwater, it does not feel heavy and is quite easy to use. The handles on each side make it very easy to hold. For safety, I attached a wrist strap so it wouldn't fall to the bottom of the ocean if I accidentally dropped it.

I used this housing with two strobes which were attached by strobe arms to the housing. I could bend the strobe arms so I could provide the best possible lighting for either wide angle images or macro images. Each type of shooting requires different positions of the strobe(s) to get good images. If I did not shoot with strobes, most of my images would have turned out very blue and you would not have been able to see the beautiful color in the marine life which I photographed.

I hope you have enjoyed viewing the images of my Subal housing for the D70 camera!
