Thank you everyone for your comments. Yes, Jay S, Burger King helped with Royal Castle's demise but they also killed a ton of mom and pop burger joints that served excellent quality burgers, hot dogs, french fries, etc. I know of one up on US1 in Hollywood that did a booming business because of their quality until a BK opened one block south of them and within months they had to close up, losing a ton of money in BK's path of expansion.

And for the record, it was "Jumpin' Jack O'Brien" and not "Bob O'Brien." He was an e-mail and Facebook friend of mine prior to his passing and I have a page for him at:
http://www.pbase.com/donboyd/memories_jumpinjack. I remember the live commercial where the door fell off after he slapped it as a signal to move forward so the next car could appear behind him. I thought it was hilarious.

Burger King blew Royal Castle out the door, and helped shape the definition of 'fast food'. And speaking of Bob O'Brien and Municipal Auto Sales - does anyone remember the live promo on Channel 7 when O'Brien hit the car door and it fell off? Wayne Farris was Channel 7s news anchor.

That building in the photo still stands today. It is occupied by a latin restaurant called La Palma. It has been that name since the 70's We use to go there late at night for a spanich steak sandwich and Mango or Pina juice after skating at Midway Skating rink.
Now you can buty a Cuban coffee out the same window in this photo.

What's rarely discussed is that 'technically', the first Burger King was in downtown Miami... "Insta-Burger King" (named after the Insta-Broiler used by the owners) was 'discovered' by James McLemore and subsequently purchased by him. He made improvements to the broiler system and, along with partner Dave Edgerton started Burger King Corporation... which then leads us to the first Burger King (Corp.) location on 36th Street...

The first Burger King was on NW 36th Street just west of 27th Ave on the South side of the street. On the north side just west was Municipal Auto Sales where Bob O'Brian was hawking used cars on TV. Great Time
