This Boreal Owl was part of a 'four owl species day'. Found by Jeff Skevington and myself in the morning, on the 2013 Dunrobin Christmas Bird Count.
We walked 240 metres down a snow mobile trail and stopped when we heard the first bird (a chickadee). Jeff proceeded to squeak a few more birds in. Jeff stated twice over the next 5 minutes 'I really think that there is an owl in there!' The birds were focussed around one point, ten feet high in the tree, the perfect height for a roosting owl. Meanwhile, being a diligent 'counter of birds' I continued to count Blue Jays (6) as they homed in on our unseen target. Jeff eventually took one step toward the melee and lo and behold announced "there is a 'bloomin' Boreal Owl in there!" (or words to that effect).
We discovered that we had stopped our walk at the perfect spot and was standing next to the very tree in which this Boreal Owl had chosen to roost in!
A combination of field-craft, skill, perseverance and lots of good fortune.
I doubt many people have run the 500 metres as fast as this, laughing uncontrolably, in snow boots, to fetch a camera?
