Santa brought me an etching (which was a lovely surprise) - one which I have
admired from afar for several months !
(Photographed through glass here - it looks much better in real life :-) )
I know just a little about the artist (and photographer) who was born in Texas
but primarily was quite a respected artist in Chicago, however, I do not know
where, and which cathedral, this etching represents. I know that he traveled in
Europe in 1939, but was in the US and especially Chicago during the war years.
This work was produced in 1944.
UPDATE #1 Now, I'm wondering if "Czestochowski" actually refers to an author who wrote a book about Swann and others who all made etches especially around Chicago during that period.. (Thanks, Carolyn)
UPDATE #2: Cedar Rapids Museum holds a large collection of Swann's works, and the curator has
confirmed to me that "Czestochowski 144" is the Czestochowski book reference. The curator told me
that the prints were made in 1944, and were thought to be of a building in or around Chicago, or perhaps
from memory or quick sketches made during Swann's travel in Europe in 1939. He was in Sweden and
Denmark, as well as France and England I believe, so I still hope to discover the building!
(He was also in the Army 1942-1943 but no locations are known.)
Via the magic of the PBase community, can I discover the building location
and name, and a photograph of it now? Any clues, please?
