FATHER ADAM STUDINSKI'S SQUARE

Krakow - Poland

In 2009 this square was named in honour of Father Adam Studzinski, a Dominican priest who was chaplain of the Polish Armed Forces during World War II. He served in Palestine and took part in the Italian Campaign. For his war service he was given several Polish military and state honors, including the Cross of Valour. He was also awarded several British honours. In his later years he remained active in veterans' organizations and in Polish scouting. In 2006, he was promoted to the rank of general in the Polish Army. He also studied art conservation at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, worked to renovate the Dominican monastery and St. Guy's Catholic Church in Krakow, and was made an honorary citizen of Krakow in 1999. Father Adam died in Krakow in 2008 at the age of 97.
Behind is the Church of St. Giles, and the Cross of Katyn commemorating Polish victims of Soviet crimes, including officers murdered at Katyn in 1940.
