Brumby Hall

The first superintendent of the Georgia Military Institute, Colonel Arnoldus V. Brumby, built this Greek revival style house. The Institute property -- now the site of the Marietta Conference Center & Resort -- was adjacent to Brumby Hall. Colonel Brumby, a West Point graduate, directed the Institute from 1851-1859. During the Civil War, he commanded the Fourteenth Georgia Regiment. When Sherman’s troops occupied Marietta in 1864, the house was used as a hospital. The Institute buildings were burned as the army departed on the “March to the Sea.” It seems the Brumby Hall was spared, as Sherman and Brumby were friends at West Point.

Now owned by the city of Marietta, the house serves as a special events facility managed through the Marietta Conference Center and Resort. Together the beautiful house and gardens offer a stately and elegant site for weddings, receptions, parties and business conferences.

The Friends of Brumby Hall have furnished and accessorized the rooms with period antiques typical of the decor found in the home of an affluent 19th century family. Artwork includes antique paintings as well as more recent works by local artists. The house is surrounded by towering oak and magnolia trees and the grounds include boxwood, perennial, knot, rose and topiary gardens.

Brumby Hall is located adjacent to the grounds of the Marietta Conference Center and Resort at 500 Powder Springs Street, just south of the historic Marietta Square.
