Slate-coloured Variant or White-winged Junco? Ottawa.
This bird was compared directly to male Dark-eyed Juncoes present at the same site. Two striking white wing bars on both sides of the bird, dark lores and black stripe through the eye,
some white on inner edges of the tertials plus a pale throat? Having search through many pictures on the internet of White-winged Juncoes, this bird's general mantle colour seems to be witin the range. Note: the photos were taken on an overcast day in the shade. ISO setting 400. At the time of the sighting, I did not notice any size difference between this bird and the other juncoes present. Although they were never side by side for a good comparison nor did I notice any extra white in the tail (3 and 1/2 feathers compared to 2 and 1/2 feathers).
