1st Place, C199, Cause and Effect: Occupation and Intifada - kleivis
by kleivis

Two little boys "killing" time waiting to cross the border at 'Qalandia Checkpoint' near Ramallah on the West Bank. Going to Jerusalem from Ramallah requiers passing this Israeli controlled checkpoint. These boys had their own machine gun and tried acting like the big boys on the other side did.

I am so sorry for the shooting. And all those kids, so unfair and unbelievable. It really make me sick. Anyway, I hope we don't draw any easy conclusions that one or both of these boys will ever become voiolent or terrorist or anything like that. That would be so unfair.

With the shooting that has just happened at the Connecticut Elementary School - this just seems to show that there is a whole environment of guns and violence that I just do not understand -apparently I should be playing video games and watching different movies - or maybe just moved to anger by my neighbor's actions. A sad picture Kleivis. A great picture.

Thanks for comments. Appreciated.

Everything a viewer needs to interpret/understand the picture is within the picture itself. Mindless, tragic "them or us" is passed to yet another generation.

I echo Shirley's comments, and the image itself is pretty damn good. TonySx

Excellent entry and very thought provoking. It would be good if more people could see this apart from those visiting this site.

A very powerful image given the situation in the middle east. If only all peoples could learn to live together in harmony just think of how the world would change for the better. Spot on for the theme.

This seems shocking to me other than the fact that I and Marv went looking for something for Zach for Christmas, there was an entire isle, both sides filled with nothing but guns, guns and more guns. There was one more half an isle for all the other toys, cars, balls, dolls (like from toy story). It really made us sick that people even thought it was cool to buy kids guns, I don't care if they are toys or not. Looking at your photo is why I don't like it. They are already in training to feel comfortable with them. Excellent photo Kleivis and definately perfect for the theme.

A powerful entry, the cause of what is continuing to happen in the Middle East, goes back so far in time. the effect, well these boys show the consequences
