Owl pellet

walking through the woods, we came across an opening with an old track leading to it. It had obviously been used as an unofficial dump some years back, when the track was drivable. On one bit of garbage, we found this owl pellet. Judging from the size of it, it was likely from a great horned owl. There were bits of hair but dominant were these bones, possibly from a red squirrel. Most owls expel these pellets of hair and bones after eating. An accumulation of such pellets is a good sign that an owl has been hanging around. Size of pellets usually indicates size of owl! This one was a couple of inches long.

Wow! I've found pellets before, but never with this large of bone fragments. Great close-up!

From the closeup view the bones look like they were from an animal much larger than a squirrel. The details of the image are exceptionally well captured! V
