A visitor to St. Agostino uses her iPhone to take a picture of one of Caravaggio's most important paintings
done for the Cavaletti family, the "Madonna of Loreto".
The painting, done in about 1603-04 is also known as the "Madonna of the Pilgrims".
It was commissioned by the heirs of the Cavaletti family to decorate their family chapel in St. Agostino.
The Virgin is holding the rather large baby Jesus, whose halo is barely defined. The Virgin Mary's mother St. Anne is shown in the background.
The two penitent pilgrims kneeling at the Virgin's doorstep symbolically represent all pilgrims who might come to Loreto to worship,
where legend says the Virgin appeared in her house which was miraculously transformed there.
The penitent pilgrims kneeling and in "our space" make it appear that other visitors may be next in line to worship at her feet.
