IMG_4298 St. Ignazio Illusionistic Ceiling.jpg

This is the fresco in the shallow fault of St. Ignazio's nave ceiling.
The shot was taken from the viewpoint medallion on the nave floor that allows the illusionism to all come together correctly.

The theme of the fresco is the Missionary work of the Jesuits, and the Entrance of St. Ignatius into heaven.

If you look at the lower edge of the image you will see an architectural arch indicating the shallowness of the actual vault.
Then look at the way the fresco 's painted columns and arches make the ceiling appear to extend illusionistically up several levels higher,
opening to the heavens in the central area, where St. Ignatius is being taken into heaven.
