San Marco is without a doubt, the main attraction in Venice, both for its history and its beauty.
The large piazza enclosing it, has numerous shops and charming sidewalk cafes, (some dating from the 18th century),
where one can have drinks or snacks while viewing the church and its fine details, one of which is shown here.
The Lion of St. Mark is the symbol of Venice. It is shown here in a facade decoration on the pediment
above the central door to the basilica. The gilded lion is shown with the book turned to the page saying
"Pax tibi Marce, evangelista meus", (Peace to you Mark, my Evangelist),
In this detail from St. Mark's facade, the pediment decoration is surmounted by angels and topped by a sculpture of St. Mark.
