We met quite a few years ago by accident. Those were the days when I would frequently go to estate sales in Dallas.
It was a Friday morning when I was poking around in someone's garage looking to buy a flower pot but this young woman caught my eye.
She was sitting at a table in the middle of the garage with dark glasses on. Seemed odd, I thought. It was rather dark in the garage.
Alas, there were no flower pots of interest and I again looked up to see this woman and suddenly realized she was a mannequin!
I instantly knew I would be taking her home. I told the gentleman in the garage who was handling the sale to put a "sold" sign on her.
I paid my $65 and walked the block and a half to my car but when I returned to the garage, I found him taking her arms off.
"Oh no!" I said. "She will go in the passenger seat!" The other shoppers started to giggle as he lifted her into my car for her trip home.
So I drove to Border's Books where my husband was working, called him on my cell phone and asked him to come out and meet my friend who I was estate saling with.
Totally unsuspecting he came to the passenger side of the car to meet my friend when he realized that she was no ordinary friend and then said... "What have you done?"
So I drove the middle or left lane all the way home hoping to hit every red light just to see other people's response when they looked up to realize this was a mannequin... and people looked, but no one noticed.
She is a beautiful girl and must have passed for being real. And as I drove I realized that she needed a name, so I decided to name her Lucy.
