Backwaters

Kill Creek Park

On Google Maps you can see my vantage point.
38.910899, -94.969517
One interesting note about the area is a couple hundred yards to the west is a old defunct ARMY ammunition facility where they made some type of rocket propellant up until 1992. Most of the land is contaminated with toxins. I think the government offered the land free to anyone that would clean it up. There have been no takers.

You said : There is no real fine detail in the image.

I have to disagree. I think the color image is quite sharp with lots of detail. As an example, take a look at 300% at the upper right shoreline. You clearly see a runner and a bench. I'd call this sharp detail.
In converting to B&W, the leaves on the trees on the left & an evergreen make things look blurred - but these are small leaves & needles that even in color can't be separated. The branches look clean and sharp; esp against the sky.
My conclusion - this is a very sharp photo with lots of detail.
The camera & lens are working fine.
I think you are being too hard on yourself.

I have it - and deleted the posted one in pending.

Uploaded the middle bracketed image as a full size flat conversion from raw to pending with full exif attached. Since that file is 13 + meg we shouldn't leave it there very long.

Strange. Some of the reflected trees look sharper than the tree. Would you post a full size color jpeg in pending?

I placed my focus point on the white bark on the bigger tree and calculated the DOF (I have a app for that) before the shot knowing that at F11 and 24 mm the DOF would have been from 6 feet away all the way to the Continental Divide. Paul

A great example of the use of a selected color.
I understand your comment on sharpness, but don't necessarily agree. The foreground looks quite sharp, though the back doesn't. Where was the point of focus?

The unusual processing is a result of the style of the challenge. It's a combination of B&W and selective color. I loved the blues in the sky reflection in the water so I used a gradient to take out all the colors on the background yet leave the blues in the water in the foreground. I did have to sponge out some natural browns in the trees and of course the green in the spruce trees on the shoreline.

This is a perfect example of the problems I've been experiencing lately. There is no real fine detail in the image. No matter which lens I use, I still have the same issue so it's either me or the camera sensor failing. My vote is it's me failing even though I was using a decent carbon fiber ball head tripod, bracketed the shots using a 3 shot burst, used a remote cable release and a $800.00 L lens. Something just don't add up so no matter what it is I still FAIL! Paul
