Apples were once a major feature of commerce in Tasmania, until Britain joined the Common Market. From that point on, Hobart went from being filled with boats loading apples for export, to being quite a quiet port, relatively. One used to be able to look down the main street and see ocean boats docked a couple of blocks away. We still like our apple cider, though, alcoholic or not. This year, all exports of apples ceased. Amazing.
