Olympia and 6 day old Apollo (m) baby gorilla at NC Zoo. Born Friday Aug. 31st, 2012.

At the time taking the photo, I did not notice what she (Olympia) was actually doing until it
was seen on the computer. I thought she was only trying to avoid getting her arm wet, so
I directed my attention to other action in the area. I did not observe any follow-up to her action.

Inquiries did not shed any light on this type of behavior. Conjecture (mine) is that she possibly
smells or licks the baby's urine as some way to check on its health. Or, perhaps she was just curious since this was her first baby.
