Bee Wolf (Philanthus ventilabris)

Fletcher Wildlife Garden

This is a beautiful large wasp, very like one of the sand wasps with the black and white abdomen, but in a different genera. They are called bee wolves because they catch bees (and sometimes wasps) to stock their nests with (food for the larvae). Nectaring on goldenrod.

A fine photo though I hate wasps. For me they mean menacing stings and trying to avoid them nesting in our attic!
