Butterfly Nebula in Cygnus aka IC1318

Reprocessed in 2019. Added deconvolution in CCDStack and then used Layer Masks in Photoshop CC to enhance the detail in the nebula.

This is a nebula area near Gamma Cygni, the bright star in the right of the image. The star cluster in the upper right is NGC6910. The dark lane between the two wings is LDN889.Sky & Telescope Sept 2012 has a very good write up this area in Going Deep and Deep Sky Wonders. The wings of the Butter Fly are both designated as IC1318.

I chosse this area as a last resort. I'd planned on imaging M27 with my 8" Meade SCT after colomiating with CCDInpector. Alas, I was way off and didn't bring my visual back. I fooled around for the better part of two hours before puntting and setting up my 80mm William Optics Flourite doublet. I used a 0.8 reducer/flattener that was not optimized for the 80mm scope, but the stars turned out pretty well.

The sky was as good as it gets! Would have been perfect for the 2000mm FL of the sct, oh well.

This is a little over 2 hours or exposure. 1+ luminaced and 54 mins color. The 80mm was at f5.4 & 440mm Fl.
