Slug Caterpillar, Epiperola sp. (Limacodidae) locomotion

Tiputini Forest Reserve, Prov. Orellana, Ecuador

This animation shows the serial muscular contractions of the slug caterpillar's "creeping disk", as well as the side-to-side head motion. This species retains the minute true legs, immediately behind the head capsule, which has a darkened ridge. The dark blotch in the middle of the head are the mouth parts; the pair of tiny spots on either side are the stemmata (larval eyes).
