Marie Ogden's Home of the Truth, an Utopian community, was responsible for the name. She and her followers moved onto a barren tract of land in 1933. This piece of Mother Nature's handiwork was not far from the farm, so the group planned to hollow out the center of this sandstone (by hand) to build a church. They managed to chisel an opening in the rock, 16 x 24 feet. A few miles from Church Rock are the remains of Ogden's ghost town.
