An elaborate stone screen or pulpitum separates the nave (where the common folk were allowed) and the quire which was the preserve of the monks. There are statues of six English kings on pedestals within the pulpitum, three on each side of a central door. The three kings shown here are Henry V, Richard II and Ethelbert of Kent. Ethelbert gave permission for the first cathedral to be built on the site and in recognition of this he is shown holding a carving of the cathedral.
