Cherhill Horse

view map

The Cherhill horse is cut into a very steep slope (800') on Cherhill down, a little below Oldbury castle.
It faces NW overlooking the A4 and the village of Cherhill.
The horse is 165’ by 220’ and is made from very fine compacted chalk.

The horse was cut by Dr Christopher Alsop in 1780.
The horse was scoured regularly and in 1935 a mixture of concrete and chalk was used.
This horse was camouflaged during World War II, and following its uncovering in 1945 was resurfaced with chalk and cement.
Also known as the Oldbury White Horse it is under the care of Cherhill parish council.

This concludes my gallery on the Cherhill Horse. Thank you all for your comments! :)

Excellent - you have framed it well and got an ideal day for it.
There's a Long Man in Sussex in similar style.
