In 1863 after Union troops raided her Missouri farm this pioneer legend took her four youngest sons and joined a wagon train headed to the Montana Territory
in order to escape the Civil War. Along the way they fought Indians. She fell in love with Montana and the pioneer life
and later relocated many of her family members to Montana. She then acted as the trail guide for 11 wagon trains from Missouri to Montana.
She's recognized in many books about pioneer women of the West. She had 11 children and newspaper reports described her as a woman of sturdy build,
well-portioned and able to hold her own in the frontier life. She was about five feet and seven or eight inches tall, and weighed about 160 pounds.
