Landscape, Cerro Mesa Plantation, Central Highlands, Santa Cruz Island, The Galapagos, Ecuador, 2012

The power of landscape photography rests largely in the relationship between light, color, and composition. On this day, the light was flat, offering no emphasis. Yet this landscape, made from the top of an observation tower in a tortoise habitat in the hills of Santa Cruz Island, still works well. The saturated greens energize the image. I composed the image around the brown path running from the foot of our observation tower to the forest in the mid-distance. That forest, in turn, points the eye towards the distant hills in the background, and the gray sky, tinged with blue, frames the image at the top.

Thanks, Carol. This landscape is evocative of Ecuador to be sure, but keep in mind that we can't use a broad brush to define the appearance of this country. Much of the mainland is alpine in nature -- the Andes Mountains shape both life and landscape there. Meanwhile, Ecuador is also an Amazonian nation, with vast rain forests and tropical landscapes. The Galapagos is a group of islands 500 miles out to sea, and each island varies in appearance due to volcanic activity. The highlands of Santa Cruz, its largest island, are by far the most verdant, well suited to agriculture. Only a small part of Santa Cruise is actually under Galapagos National Park controll. In its highlands, we find plantations such as this one, home to coffee, bananas, and of course, Giant Tortoises.

This is exactly as I pictured Ecuadoe to look like...the verdant rolling gentle hills, the foggy skies, the wet textures. It really is a beautiful place I see from your image.
