Jumping spider (Phidippus clarus), male

This very handsome jumping spider is large, for a jumper, at about 15 mm. It was duelling with another male on a milkweed plant, when I came along. This one eventually retreated into a silken shelter on the leaf, in which was a brown female. The females are utterly different from the males in colour and pattern, being nowhere near as colourful. I was struck by the shiny green fangs!

Photographed at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden.

I am glad they are very small and we are very big. If it was the other way around, I would not leave home without a rocket launcher...
