Water used to fill these pools and deposit calcium carbonate, or travertine, along the edges, building up
these walls over many centuries. Much of the water that used to flow into this system has been diverted for irrigation,
but some is allowed to remain. So now, we enjoy a verdant oasis on a mound of travertine as well as these impressive walls.
