Rusty Snaketail (Ophiogomphus rupinsulensis)

After photographing the Lilypad Clubtail I posted yesterday and walking around that area for a while, I set out back to the road because my free time was running out. On the way out I got an overwhelming itch to do another walkaround. I felt like there was still something more to see. I checked the time, saw that I had time left for just one more walkaround, so I turned around and went back. When I got back I stopped to scan the water and rocks for flying things when I noticed a green dragonfly perched on the rock beside me. I glanced and thought "just a pondhawk" and went back to scanning, but something didn't seem right so I did a double take. I then went from thinking "just a pondhawk" to "@#$%#&!!! that's a Rusty Snaketail!!!" Rusty Snaketails are rare here. I have seen them before, but what made this so exciting was the opportunity to get my first photo because the others I had seen were always flying around, going fast and never stopping within range of my camera. This one was perched right beside me and my camera was ready to go. This guy stayed put for more photos than I could take. It seemed like I had every four leaf clover in the area in my pocket for luck today. And there is still more…

You're lucky! This is a real beauty!
Like in photographing birds it's the last unexpected one that yields the best results!

This is not only a fantastic find, but a phenomenal shot. You have been having a streak of luck a mile wide lately. I say 'luck' only because it seems that is so often the key to seeing these rarities. But knowledge and know how, which you have, are key. Congratulations! ~V~

P.S. I am envious :-)
