A Private Moment in the Children's Playground

Washington Square Village Gardens - Greenwich Village NYC

Hideo Sasaki was the landscape architect for this playground & surrounding landscape. The NYU2031 Plan calls for the destruction of this playground and the adjoining park strips on Mercer Street and the rest of the Sasaki landscape, including the crown jewel central garden for the construction of massive skyscrapers. Playground users, residents and business establishments in the area are nearly a 100% opposed to the project as well as an overwhelming number of people in Greenwich Village and throughout NYC and other parts of our world.
Sadly, NYU has not proposed to build suitable replacements for the playgrounds, park strips and gardens they propose to destroy.

The whole proposed construction area has been a magnet for NYC tourists who want to see Greenwich Village not more skyscrapers. The construction project will destroy the heart of Greenwich Village's tourist industry and the community life blood indefinitely and perhaps conclusively.

Unfortunately, over the years I have not had permission from WSV and the parents of children using the playground to photograph this area and show how heavily it is used throughout the day.

Thank you for your comment.

Local Greenwich Village community, NYU Faculty against the NYC/NYU 2031 & Greenwich Village Society Historical Preservation groups are still fighting the plan in court. Seehttp://www.pbase.com/hjsteed/laguardia_place_community_garden

Best wishes...

I remember this playground, I used to go there as a kid. That is so sad that they are going to completely destroy it. The only complaint that I had about this park was that they only had cement underneath the slides instead of mulch or something.http://www.mossrock.com.au/softfall-mulch11
