Rabbit vs Black Snake I

The black snake was in the middle of the road and had a baby cottontail coiled in it’s grasp ready to start swallowing it. My brother pulled over and I grabbed my camera to attempt to get some photos of the snake. We must have distracted the snake enough that it relaxed it’s hold on the rabbit and it scurried to the side of the road and disappeared in some tall grass.

Suddenly a brown blur attacked the snake! It was the mother rabbit, presumably to fight off the snake long enough for it’s young to escape. They were coiled up and rolling on the pavement as I snapped away. My brother said he thought the snake bit the rabbit a couple of times so I don’t know if it will survive.

The whole thing lasted only a few seconds before the mother rabbit made her escape into the tall grass. The black snake then scurried into the direction of the rabbits where we lost sight of them.

I had my 200mm with the 2x extender attached to the 60D, set up for wildlife shots while on the lake. It was too long and I didn’t have time to make any adjustments so I just hoped for the best. They didn’t turn out that good but it was an amazing sight to witness.
